Stuff by the Cast/Director
| "I do read the websites. People post up opinions about the actors and the story and I sometimes
sit there for hours and hours and read the comments. It must be very frustrating to feel your favorite book is going to be
filmed and think, 'How are they going to stuff it up this time?'" |
|
|
-- Director Peter Jackson |
| "It's just going to be...I'm trying to think of the right word - without making it sound like
the usual fashionable superlative. I think it will create film history. I think it's going to have the biggest impact, on
screen, of anything of the last 40 or 50 years." |
|
-- Christopher Lee (Saruman), in SFX Magazine (#65) |
"Well, you know the books are so amazing. They deal with
the nature of fear, and the nature of greed, and peoples thirst for power for powers sake. But Sam isnt interested in any
of that. When most people would give way to legitimate fear, insecurity, or terror, Sam doesnt even know how to give way.
He just knows how to be honest and loyal. And, when somebody embodies those qualities, and they happen to exist in a time
of great peril, they shine and become a beacon of hope for other folks."
------Sean Astin
Hobbits are very positive people, and that's how we behaved on set. We tried to bring people
up and make them feel good, because that's what hobbits are like. It was an incredible experience. It just changed all of
us. It was like being in The Beatles, you know.
--Domnic Monaghan
The friendship between Frodo and Sam is a very
very powerful friendship. I see it really as being an example of pure friendship, of friendship without strings attached.
That I am here for you, I am here to help you, and I don't expect anyuthing in return. ~ Peter Jackson in Quest for the Ring
"It was crucial for the audience to see that
there was this complete and utter devotion from the three Hobbits toward Frodo--that we would protect Frodo with our lives.
Merry and Pippin have a friendship which borders on mental telepathy. In the same way, Billy and I understood how each otherthinks." --Dominic Monghan
They're so close; it's like one completes a side of the other's personality. Then they
get split up, and both of them go through hell. That's one of the most interesting things to explore as an actor--to see a
character separated from all the people he trusts and relies on, then to be put back together again." ~ Billy Boyd on Merry
and Pippin
"Later, we sit and watch the filming, in the top room of the tower of Cirith Ungol.
The scene is trimmed to its essentials. The dialog is not always Tolkien's, but I have to return to the book to be sure, the
spirit is so close. I get to hear one of my favorite lines: 'You can't go walking in the Black Land in naught but your skin,
Mr. Frodo.' The essence of Sam. Peter gives the dialog a subtext. Sam is thinking, 'I'm going to destroy that thing that's
causing you so much pain - by myself if that's what's needed'. They spend all day on this bit, so critical to the emotional
arc of the story. In the end, Sean Astin as Sam delivers the line with weariness, grief, determination, courage, and love.
I leave with tears in my eyes." ~ LOTR crew member
"I will take Legolas, and this experience in New Zealand, wherever I go. The beautiful thing about
being an actor is every character you embrace, when you move on, you take part of the character with you."
--Orlando Bloom

From the Books
All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is
strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be
blade that was broken: The crownless again shall be king.
-Gandalf's letter
Farewell, and may the blessing of Elves and Men and all Free Folk go with you. May the stars shine upon
your faces!
---Elrond's blessing at the departure of the company from Rivendell
"Now look here, Sir!" He turned, facing up to Faramir with all the courage that he could muster. "Don't
you go taking advantage of my master because his servant's no better than a fool. You've spoken very handsome all along,
put me off my guard, talking of Elves and all. But handsome is as handsome does we say. Now's a chance to show your
quality."
-Samwise Gamgee
"Hey you!" he said roughly. "What are you up to?" "Nothing, nothing.", said Gollum
softly. "Nice Master!" "I daresay," said Sam. "But where have you been to - sneaking off and sneaking back,
you old villain!" Gollum withdrew himself, and a green glint flickered under his heavy lids. Almost spider-like
he looked now, crouched back on his bent limbs, with his protruding eyes. The fleeting moment had passed, beyond recall. "Sneaking,
sneaking!" he hissed. "Hobbits always so polite, yes O nice Hobbits! Sméagol brings them up secret ways
that nobody else could find. Tired he was, thirsty he was, yes thirsty; and he guides them and he searches for paths,
and they say sneak! sneak! Very nice friends, O yes my precious, very nice."
-Samwise Gamgee
"Well, I'm back" -Sam Gamgee
"Eavesdropping Sir? I don't follow you, begging your pardon. There ain't no eaves at Bag End, and that's
a fact." -Sam Gamgee
"Fool of a Took! This is a serious journey, not a hobbit walking-party. Throw yourself in next time, and then you will
be no further nuisance. Now be quiet!" -Gandalf
"Saruman, Saruman! Saruman, you missed your path in life. You should have been the king's jester and
earned your bread, and stripes too, by mimicking his counsellors. Ah me!" -Gandalf
"Old Fool! Old Fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!" -Lord
of the Nazgûl
"Go not to the Elves for counsel, for they will say both no
and yes." -Frodo Baggins

From the movies
| "FRODO (V.O.): When we turn away from the darkness of our past to take comfort in our peaceful
lives, we sometimes forget how dearly that peace was bought. But there is much worth remembering in the darkness..." |
|
-- The first line of Fellowship, from an early draft of the script |
The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in
the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.
-Galadriel's voice
Frodo: Youre late! Gandalf: A wizard
is never late, Frodo Baggins, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to!!
-Part 2: Gandalf and Bilbo meet again...
Frodo: I'm going to Mordor alone. Sam: Of course you are, and I'm going with you!
Sam:
(to Frodo) I made a promise...Gandalf said "Don't you leave him, Samwise Gamgee," and I don't mean to. I don't mean to.
Sam:
Hey! Mr. Frodo's not going anywhere without me. Elrond: No, indeed. It is hardly possible to separate you, even when he
is summoned to a secret council and you are not.
Gandalf: My dear Frodo, Hobbits really are amazing creatures.
You can learn all there is to know about their ways in a month, and yet after a hundred years they can still surprise you.
Bilbo: I don't know half of you half as well as I should like and I like half of you half as
well as you deserve.
Elrond: Nine companions... So be it! You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring! Pippin: Great!
Where are we going?
Frodo: Its a pity Bilbo didnt kill him when he had the chance! Gandalf: Pity? It was pity
that stayed Bilbos hand. Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Gandalf:
Do not be too eager to deal out death and judgement. Even the very wise can not see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum
has some part to play yet, for good or ill, before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.
Pippin:
What's that? Merry: This, my friend, is a pint. Pippin: It comes in pints? I'm
getting one!
Aragorn: Gentlemen, we do not stop till nightfall. Pippin: But what about breakfast? Aragorn:
You've already had breakfast. Pippin: One, yes. But what about second breakfast? Merry: I don't think he knows about
second breakfast, Pip. Pippin: What about elevenses? And luncheon? And afternoon tea? And dinner? And supper? He knows
about those, right? Merry: I don't think so, Pip.
Gandalf: Samwise Gamgee,
have you been eavesdropping? Sam: I haven't been droppin' no eaves, sir, honest. Gandalf: What did you hear? Speak! Sam: N-nothing important. That is, I heard a good deal about a ring, and a dark lord, and something about
the end of the world but please, Mr. Gandalf, sir, don't hurt me. Don't turn me into anything... unnatural.
Frodo:
I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened. Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times,
but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other
forces at work in this world Frodo besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the ring, in which case you also were
meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.
Pippin: Anyways, you need people of intelligence on this
sort of... mission... quest... thing. Merry: Well, that rules you out, Pip.
Boromir: It is a strange thing that
we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing. Such a little thing.
